It is time.
Always remember it's now
What has happened and where will it lead us? It appears we have shifted from “We are the world” to the “I“ Generation. This concerns me. We need to figure out how we have arrived at this place? How can we fix this? It appears we have gotten out of Balance. It seems that, before we were all so “connected” that we had the ability to create from within ourselves. Go outside and pretend that the rocks in the backyard were castles or cars.
When we needed answers we would ask our parents, our teachers or go to the library or encyclopedia. Now we Google it. I am not saying technology is bad, however I am saying that it appears we have become more input than output. We have plugged in and disengaged to a degree. I have watched couples out for a meal together, not talking because they are texting or on their laptop. I have seen kids at slumber parties, ignoring the others in the room while they are busy on their smart phones. When in the presence of others shouldn’t we pay attention to them and enjoy their company? Isn’t it bad manners to ignore them? Aren’t we missing the moment? What would our grandparents say? It seems the consumer equations are Buy More = Have More & Be More or “If I don’t get what I want I will be disappointed and somebody is to blame.” How about “You can’t always get what you want, but you can get what you need.” ?? I always believed that rather than lyrics this was a great philosophy courtesy of the Rolling Stones.
How about getting back to basics? Knowing our neighbors? Spending time with our families and friends enjoying the simple things in life (dinner conversation, building things, playing board or outdoor games). Being grateful for the blessings: Love, Health, Family, Friends, Food & Shelter. Newest electronic gadget + the fastest car + designer clothes + the most expensive home + number of gifts under the tree does not equal happiness. Our life experiences make us rich beyond the stuff we end up accumulating.
We need to recognize that we share the world, we are accountable, we share our energy and the possibilities that lie ahead of us are endless. We all have feelings, concerns, needs, dreams, fears and desires. We have an opportunity in the present moment to be compassionate, show kindness, learn to cope with adversity, get well and make a difference.
My son, made a bumper sticker during his Freshman Year in high school in 2003, it said ,“We study history to learn about our past. Our past has carried the burden of hate. Don’t you think it is time for a change?“ And here we are doing the same old song and dance.
May we will learn once and for all to find the balance, love and support that we need to move through the chaos this moment and the future. It is time.
